My Little Pony: The Movie (2017)
My rating: 5/10
Pretty much your typical cartoon tie-in movie: more of the same, but with more locations, and everybody has shading and celebrity voices now because of the budget. Unfortunately, the things that work for a 20 minute cartoon don't necessarily translate well to feature length, so it's actually a little bit less fun than what I've seen of the show.

Summer reading for Carlos and the Intern?
It... It's January. And even then, I don't participate in the Summer Reading Program. (Not that I would want to, anyway.)
- Carlos
****
I read a LOT of books (like, three or four a day), so I have no idea. What I do know is that, at some point this year, I want to read A Babysitter's Guide To Monster Hunting by Joe Ballarini. Who knows? Maybe I'll find some tips for how to keep Esteban safe when I'm babysitting. (The other day, I tried to take him to the park, and we almost got eaten by the playground playset. Not even kidding. We're lucky one of the Sheriff's Secret Policemen got us out of there.)
Whatever I read, my main goal is going to be "make sure none of my sisters get eaten by a Librarian".

A Babysitter's Guide To Monster Hunting (2020) Review
Tom Felton is a supernatural sensation in #Netflix's family-friendly spookfest A Babysitter's Guide To Monster Hunting (2020) #MonthOfSpooks #Review
Directed by the perennially underrated Rachel Talalay from a screenplay adapted from his own novels by Joe Ballarini, “A Babysitter’s Guide To Monster Hunting” is a candy-coloured kaleidoscope of “Men In Black”, “Beetlejuice”, “Spy Kids” with just a pinch here and there of darkness and a generous scoop of family friendly Halloween fun.

In the U.K., the pop culture phrase “behind the sofa” is used to refer to media that is scary enough to prompt kids to hide behind the nearest piece of furniture, but engaging enough to keep them from outright fleeing the room. Strongly associated with Doctor Who, “behind the sofa” is a concept that can be applied far beyond the long-running science fiction series to speculative fiction (in particular horror) media targeted toward children and families. It’s perhaps a phrase British-American director Rachel Talalay, known for her work on some of NuWho’s most visually-ambitious installments, had in mind when directed Netflix’s recently-released kids horror-fantasy flick A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting.
A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting, adapted for the screen by Joe Ballarini from his middle grade book series, has its share of scares—especially in the film’s first few minutes. The movie opens on a little girl, Kelly, trying to fall asleep in her darkened room...

A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting (2020)
Tumblr media
If it’s Halloween night and your kids are too little, too scared, or prevented from going trick-or-treating due to a global pandemic, then A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting might be suitable as the night's last movie. The plot is so lethargic, it ought to put its viewers to sleep.
Babysitter Kelly (Tamara Smart) is horrified when a pack of monsters kidnaps Jacob (Ian Ho), the boy she's sitting. Suddenly, Liz (Oona Laurence), a tough-as-nails monster hunter from a secret society of babysitters appears. Refusing to sit by as the Boogeyman/Grand Guignol (Tom Felton) does who knows what to the boy, Kelly accompanies Liz on her investigation.
Based on a trilogy of books from Joe Ballarini (who also writes the screenplay), A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting often feels like the opener of a Disney Channel TV show. It’s got a beginning, middle, and end, the special effects are fine for what this is… but no time is spent defining the characters. It’s like we'll get to the ins and outs of them in a later episode so there's no need to bother with it now.
Everyone we meet is a collection of tropes and clichés, brought to life by so-so actors. Tamara Smart, Oona Laurence, and Ian Ho are just getting their acting careers started. It feels wrong to judge them harshly. The same goes for many of their co-stars. You make excuses until you realize only 1 out of 10 of the humans/creatures you see are even remotely believable or engaging. The picture’s only 94 minutes and it feels like so much longer.
Adults will grow restless watching the bullied math-genius nerdy girl who pines for the hot guy but is stuck babysitting the scaredy-cat whose ice-queen mom has a ridiculously long list of don’ts for the night. It wasn't made for them. Still, this excuse only goes so far. ABGtMH desperately needed a strong emotional anchor to make the story about more than the obvious "confronting your childhood fears" thing. Without it, the underground society of superhero babysitters isn’t anything special and is too silly for you to want more. Nonetheless, we’re teased a half-dozen plot points sure to appear in the sequels this film desperately wants.
The one good thing about this ordeal is Tom Felton. He’s unrecognizable under his monster makeup and has all of the best scenes. The rest is harmless. More accurately, it’s bland. Other than the Grand Guignol, the only entertainment I got came from the casting. We never see Jacob’s father but his mom is portrayed by Tamsen McDonough (rather cartoonishly). I don’t know what’s going on there. Same with Kelly’s father, played by the whitest person in this movie. You look at Canada-born Cameron Bancroft, at Crystal Balint (who plays the mom), and at Tamara Smart. A conversation about the real father must be right around the corner.
Younger audiences may be more enthusiastic about this kiddie adventure. I can only speculate. As an adult, I found it completely forgettable. (November 14, 2020)

Is It IMPOSSIBLE To Cross The Event Horizon? | Black Hole Firewall Paradox Check out the Space Time Merch Store https://ift.tt/Zgj3Oq6 Sign Up on Patreon to get access to the Space Time Discord! https://ift.tt/hWMY40A So you’ve decided to jump into a black hole. Good news: as long as the black hole is big enough you can sail through the event horizon without harm and get to experience the interior of the black hole before you’re annihilated by the central singularity. Or so we once thought. These days, quite a few physicists believe that the only way to avoid horrible contradictions in fundamental physics generated by black holes is for all them to be surrounded by screens of extreme energy that prevent anything from ever entering the event horizon. Sounds outlandish? Welcome to black holes. So let’s find out why many of our most brilliant physicists take these black hole firewalls deadly seriously. PBS Member Stations rely on viewers like you.
